Yoga is for everybody, I truly believe that. Moreover, everybody can do yoga. Can everyone do a down dog? Perhaps not, however, down dog is just one of the thousands of poses that fall under the practice of Yoga. There are many different styles of yoga and each of those has its own variations and expansions of traditionally Hatha yoga poses , sequences and Asanas. So, why do I believe Yoga is beneficial for everyone no matter age or physical challenges? Like most people that come to Yoga, I have my own story. I began Yoga in 2004, after being diagnosed with a severe case of Fibromyalgia. Now, I could give you my opinions with that whole experience but that is a much longer story. To synopsis, I went to the doctor, I left prescriptions and a predication of drug therapy, no cure. I fired said doc. and went to a yoga class, dragging my sorry arm with me. I went home tossed the meds (responsibly of course) and not long after, I became a certified yoga instructor teaching up to 16 classes a week. I could not have ever imagined I could do that given the intense pain I had prior to making yoga a part of my life. This is my story, and I do not mean any disrespect to anyone out there suffering from Fibromyalgia or any other illnesses. What I am saying is that there is another way. Maybe for you, it is Yoga, maybe not but it sure won’t hurt to give it a go.
I believe, especially with the western culture and lifestyle, we simply do not move enough and certainly not in the ways our bodies were designed to move. We dump ourselves into uncomfortable positions at desks, coaches and in cars and stay there much too long. We walk less, bend less, twist less, and balance less than we can should , could or would be able to if we just made It, up and out more in our daily lives. We are the Too Much society. We eat, smoke and drink too much. We breathe in so many system depleting toxins that our bodies and minds are never truly at their best. All of this overtaxes the systems of the body and we do not nearly enough to re-balance and replenish ourselves. Besides the fact that movement begets movement, there are the emotional benefits of the breath work, the aspect of becoming more in tune with your body, and being able to feel when something is amiss. When you are keyed into your breath and the ways in which your body moves with that deep Yogic breath, you begin to feel the dance that happens as you connect the two, breath with movement. How could you not begin to appreciate the way your beautiful body moves, the way you can feel the strength and rejuvenation that comes from “the dance”, the deeper connection with yourself and with those –practicing along with you in a class. If for no other reason, just doing yoga to get out of the “monkey brain” as we call it, the little “stuff” that eats at our best selves, this in itself is a great reason to practice yoga. That is however just the tip of the tree pose :>) . There is a saying I turn to a lot in yoga, “blessed are the flexible for they are not so easily bent out of shape”. It’s so true isn’t it?
As Deepah Chopra says, “Any reason for practicing yoga is a good reason. Enhancing flexibility and releasing stress are as noble a purpose for performing yoga as the awakening of spirituality. This is the great gift of yoga – it serves and nourishes us at every level of our being and spontaneously contributes to greater wellbeing in all domains of life.”-Well said!
Even a beginners class can be challenging for an experienced exerciser, if the attitude toward the postures is one of openness and commitment. A more advanced class can be extremely challenging and humbling. Yoga points out (gently of course) that we are not as strong nor as flexible as we had previously imagined. Then yoga graciously shows the path toward increasing our strength and discovering our flexibility. I hope you will give Yoga a go, I think you will leave the class wondering why you waited so long!
